What is the difference between the metaverse, augmented reality and virtual reality?

February 14, 2023 by Swathi Kirthyvasan

The metaverse augmented reality, and virtual reality are all technologies that enhance the human experience by overlaying digital information onto the physical world. However, each one is distinct and has its own unique characteristics.

The metaverse refers to a shared virtual space where users can interact with each other and a virtual environment. It can include elements from both virtual reality and augmented reality and is often imagined as a future version of the internet where people can live, work and play in a completely virtual environment.

Augmented reality refers to the overlay of digital information onto the real world, typically via a smartphone or tablet camera. This allows people to see a blend of the physical and digital worlds in real-time, and interact with both in new and innovative ways.

Virtual reality refers to a completely artificial, computer-generated environment that a user can interact with. It typically requires specialized hardware, such as a VR headset, to fully immerse the user in a synthetic environment. In virtual reality, the user is cut off from the real world and experiences only the artificial environment.
