It’s not absolutely necessary for a UX designer to know how to code. It’s all up to the designer if he/she really wants to learn. You can survive with a basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and maybe a little bit of Javascript and jQuery; if you really want to get into the developer’s shoes. A UX designer’s job is to work on research, understanding problems, come up with solutions and probably also work on design; do you really think he/she will be able to/have the time to code too? Why do we even have coders in the first place? Unless you’re someone who is really interested in getting hands-on with code, it is absolutely not necessary to know how to code.
