What is the difference between information design and interaction design?

October 4, 2018 by Dimitrios Stamatis

Information design is the discipline tasked with the presentation and visualization of information in a comprehensible and attractive manner. It can simplify complex data making it both easier to understand and reducing comprehension time.

Information design often employs visual elements in the form of rich infographics that manage to communicate huge chunks of otherwise dry information in a more delightful way. Good information design creates visual points of interest, presents insights and limits cognitive load. Interaction design, on the other hand, is tasked with the flow of said information. How things are interconnected, reached, operated and accessed. It focuses on the interactive parts, on the moving intersections and user interactions needed to achieve a specific task. An interaction designer is enhancing the flow of information inside the application to make it as accessible and usable as possible to the user.
Ideally the two disciplines are employed in the same qualitative level since they are complementary. Behind any well-crafted website or application, you will find both disciplines working side by side to offer the best product experience.

About Dimitrios Stamatis

I am a designer of physical and digital products with a background in industrial design and visual communication. I have worked in design consultancies in London, China, and Greece. I strive to design products, services, and experiences that address pressing human needs by enabling change, challenging preconceptions and shifting paradigms. I like to prototype possibilities, simplify complexities and bring the future a little closer. I am fascinated by human behavior (mostly the irrational side) and I like to question a lot.
