Superficially, yes, UX design in more competitive than web development looking in terms of job openings and career opportunities. I can’t simply generalize matters like this, because of then we make this kind of info based on wrong or asymmetrical information. In order to completely understand the problem, we must get to the base of the problem and evaluate what’s the current situation on the market.
Web development has been around for decades now and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Websites are the norm of communication, advertising, even for illegal activity, so their user base is just about everyone. Unfortunately, even though just about anyone needs a website, not everyone needs a great looking and functioning one. That’s where the problem arises, and while UX designers focus on the function and logic of the website, there are simply less problems to solve with the capabilities of our current hardware.
The set-up we are using now in terms of monitor, mouse, and keyboard has not been changed a lot since the beginning of computing and proves a big limit while software has been growing rapidly. And while we could say that web development is more “competitive” than UX design, we should acknowledge that they are in fact so different that no job opportunities overlap and both prove a valuable skill in a world of tomorrow. User experience design will prove to be a big trend and will yield great career opportunities when hardware revolutions happen and with introductions of concepts like augmented and virtual reality, different mediums of communication etc
