UX Design has become a trending career choice for students and professionals today. It is the excitement and creativity that draws people to taking design as career option. But courses for design are quite few and only a couple of colleges and institutes offer a proper degree for UX Design. We have gathered a list of what we think are some the best institutes that offer a good UX, Interaction or Product design course. Also to note: a course in design can burn a hole in your pocket, so do go for it only if you can. If you aren’t able to do so, there are plenty of courses online that offer comprehensive training in design which are absolutely amazing and don’t really cost much. Ultimately, it’s your choice on how you want to learn and master the skill.
1. NID (National Institute of Design)
NID offers professional design programmes at Bachelors and Masters level. They also offer academic exchange programmes with leading design institutions/universities across the world. It has courses in UX design both at Bachelors and Masters level.
B.Des degree – It is a 4 year programme which is offered only in Ahmedabad campus.
M.Des degree – It is a 2.5 year programme which is offered across three campuses, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bangalore (different courses are taught in different campuses).

Product Design (Both Bachelor and for Masters)
This programme inculcates user-centric approach and processes. It assimilates inputs in diverse domains such as human factors, cognitive ergonomics, form studies, studio skills, advanced CAD, research methods, design management, materials & manufacturing processes & social sciences. Students are actively encouraged to participate in collaborative projects with industrial houses, social sector, government & MNC design projects which can be broadly classified into design for industry, design for quality of life, design for healthcare, design for social impact, design for sustainability and design led futures.
Information Design (only Masters)
Information Design program is a multidimensional program that synchronises the fields of design, visual aesthetics, computer science, statistics and humanities to inculcate proficiency into the students. It believes that there is a need for design intervention because information in its raw form is complex and should be transformed into insightful nuggets that can be easily understood by the stakeholders. It aims to create competent design professionals who are adept in varied domains of Information Design, User Interface Design and User Experience Design. The program intends to equip them with the know-how of transforming complex information and data into clarified user experiences on different digital platforms that lead to effective knowledge and insight generation.
Interaction Design (only masters)
It focuses on design and behaviour of various forms of digital products ranging form mobile, web based, transportation, healthcare, and other domains. It is a course which lays emphasis research as it believes that the ability to conceptualise, visualise and prototype products following design process begins with research phase and progresses till the final design development. The students gain adequate knowledge and training enabling them to design wide range of products using varied digital media/technologies and for diverse target audiences.
New Media Design (only masters)
The New Media Design course attempts to understand the impact new technologies may have on mankind in the future. The program is transdisciplinary which enables students to create links between fields of art, science, technology and design.

The fee is submitted semester wise. The fees is subject to change with a change in mess and hostel fee. The current fee for the 1st semester is- 1,63,020 INR and for the second semester is- 1,52,365 INR. This fees includes the hostel and mess fee.

2. IDC, IIT Bombay
IDC at IIT Bombay envisions a holistic design education by making sure that the students turn into responsible contributors to the society. It enables them to identity contemporary issues, inculcate critical thinking, critique conventional solutions, and challenge the status quo to arrive at creative solutions through collaborative team efforts at different levels of society and influencing policymaking that lead to innovations.
They have both B.Des and M.Des programmes. They even have a 5 year dual degree at the end of which a person will get both B.Des and M.Des degree.
UX Courses offered by IDC
Communication Design (Masters)
This programme looks at developing graduates with better maturity in handling communication design problems, who will have a deeper understanding of aesthetic aspects, and will generate methods and processes for solving communication problems. The emphasis is to become a creative problem solver who can effectively use various design methods.
Interaction Design (Masters)
It aims at creating graduates with good analytical abilities, skilled with specific techniques to create solutions for Indian users and Indian industry. It largely focuses on interactive medias, mobile communication applications, interfaces for software applications, interactive gaming and learning applications.
One needs to qualify CEED exam and minimum course requirements to apply to any Master programme at IDC.
3. Department of Design, IIT Guwahati
Department of Design, IIT Guwahati offers a B.Des, M.Des and PhD degree in design. The focus of these programs is on the study, invention, and creative use of technologies to create effective, usable, enjoyable experiences with technology through interdisciplinary research in engineering, design, behavioural and social sciences, and to understand the impact of technology on individuals, groups, and organisations.

To get admission in the UG programme one has to qualify the Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) conducted by IITs. Candidates should have also passed the qualifying examination (Class XII or equivalent) with physics, chemistry and mathematics as subjects.
To get admission in the PG programme one to qualify the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) conducted by IITs as a part of their central admission procedure. They further shortlist through aptitude test and further on through a personal interview session.

Digital design and innovation (UG)
In this the students learn about user interface and interaction engineering. The vision of this course is to create designers who will be able to design and develop desirable and useable user interfaces and interaction designs for products and services that enhance the overall user experience. It is a three year programme.
Design-led innovation (PG)
its main concentration is on creating innovative physical-digital User Experience. The vision of this program is to create innovators who will explore and apply the understanding of human behaviour, context, business strategy and technology towards the creation of innovative and sustainable products and services with the potential to drive positive change individually as well as at a larger social level.
Human centred design (UG and PG)
The aim is to keep the humans at the centre and create and think design around them, so that they get the maximum benefit. The output of the problem which exists could either be a product, a service, a system, or a space. Improving human interaction and experience forms the bedrock of this course.
To guarantee a seat at Srishti school of art and design one has to qualify the entrance test. Since it comes under the jurisdiction of Karnataka government, the students enrolled will get a degree from the Bengaluru Central University.
