What are some red flags to watch out for in UX design interviews?

February 22, 2023 by Shubhanjay Sathe

During a UX design interview, there are a few red flags to look out for that could indicate potential issues with the company or role. Here are some warning signs to keep in mind:

  1. Lack of focus on user needs: If the interviewer doesn’t ask you questions about user research or how you would approach understanding user needs, it could be a sign that the company doesn’t prioritize the user’s perspective.
  2. No clear design process: If the company doesn’t have a clear design process or if the interviewer can’t explain how the design process works, it could indicate that design is not a priority or that the company lacks direction.
  3. Limited collaboration with other teams: If the company doesn’t collaborate closely with other teams, such as development or marketing, it could lead to challenges in executing on designs or understanding user needs.
  4. No emphasis on testing and feedback: If the company doesn’t prioritize testing and feedback, it could be a sign that they don’t take user experience seriously or that they may not be interested in improving their products.
  5. Unrealistic expectations: If the interviewer describes unrealistic expectations or an unmanageable workload, it could be a warning sign that the company doesn’t value work-life balance or may not understand the complexity of UX design work.
  6. Toxic work culture: If the interviewer makes negative comments about their team, company culture, or clients, it could indicate a negative work environment.

If you notice any of these warning signs during a UX design interview, it’s worth considering whether the company or role is the right fit for you.
