Do developers dislike working with UX designers?

September 10, 2018 by Swathi Kirthyvasan

Let’s look at this question from both points of views; the designer and developer.

Designers are mainly responsible for designing the experience and the visuals of a product. Developers are responsible for writing the logic for the product along with developing the UI.

Now again, let’s divide the designer into a few groups. There are those designers who design the complete flow and visuals and then pass on the files along with the developer specifications. They create the specs or use tools which help developers download the specs easily. Now with everything in hand, if the developer messes up the UI or the logic, calls the designers a 100 times to resolve issues, just imagine how the designer feels.

On the other hand, there is also the situation when both the designer and developers are in sync and understand how things work. There are proper coordination and communication during the development.

The other case is when the designer sends files without any specs and doesn’t coordinate or work well with the developer. In this case, it’s the developer who has to figure out things and is likely to get infuriated with the designer.

Now coming to developers, let’s divide them into a few parts. There are developers who do super good work after receiving all the specs and the communication between the both of them is perfect.

There are developers who screw up code even after receiving proper specs and communication with the designer.

And then there are those who get frustrated with the designer when there is no proper communication or specs received.

So you see, it’s not a general case where each of them dislikes working with the other. It all depends on how the coordination and communication between both of them go. If both the designer and developer work well with each other, then there is no dislike here, but if one of them goes for a toss, each of the other will absolutely grow a dislike for each other.
